How to put together a system at an affordable price that can outperform some megabuck systems
Model 10S Armada System
"I have never heard better imaging, and I have carefully listened to many systems over the years, starting in the mid-1950s. I would compare it somewhat to Quad ESLs, but with better bass."
(10S Armada System with one subwoofer) Audioreview.com 2/26/07
Armada Systems combine minimonitors with one or two of our subwoofers, and a pair of NSM custom sand-fillable Sandbags stands. You
end up with a system that is greater than the sum of its parts. These systems provide the utmost flexibility in fine-tuning the loudspeaker's interaction with the room to deliver an ultimate listening experience and outclass most minimonitor subwoofer systems and even some highly regard monitor-pedestal bass systems. While a good floorstanding loudspeaker offers the utmost efficiency in packaging, a good sub-sat system with two active subwoofer offers the utmost flexibility in tweaking the system's performance to maximize its performance relative to room acoustics. Monitor-pedestal bass systems such as the Wilson Watt Puppy offer added performance because they reduce interference of the bass into the higher frequencies by using two
enclosures. However sub-sat systems with two active subwoofers like our Armada Systems offer the best performance because the bass enclosure is completely separated from the enclosure producing the higher frequencies. And our custom Sandbags stands are a rock
solid foundation for minimonitors that isolates them from room resonances. One subwoofer can dramatically improve the performance of a minimonitor system by extending the bass and allowing you to listen to the system at lower levels where the minimonitors image better and are more accurate. Moreover, with two active subwoofers, each subwoofer can be relocated in the room independent of the Kayaks to get the best bass response and defeat room resonances that naturally occur. This is because the crossover and volume control of each subwoofer can be adjusted to match the output of the minimonitors and the subwoofer's bass output can be brought into absolute phase alignment by repositioning the subwoofer and/or using the subwoofer's phase switch.Interestingly, the Armada System also improves the minimonitors' performance because the performance of the minimonitors is further
enhanced by a high quality 6 dB per octave filter that incorporates film foil elements to filter out bass from the minimonitors' woofers allowing even more linear bass integration between the minimonitors and our subwoofers and more delicate movements of the minimonitors' woofers
which result in better midrange imaging. Even if the monitors are operated full range they will image better because, with the subwoofers in the system, the minimonitors will be played at lower volume since there is no psycoacoustical need to try to get the minimonitors to pressurize the room.Model 10S Armada System
The Model 10S Armada System combines one of the best minimonitors with the NSM EXP, one
of the best small subwoofers, and a pair of NSM custom sand-fillable Sandbags stands. Both the Model 10S and the EXP will outclass anything at their respective price point. You end up with a modular system that is greater than the sum of its parts. And you can start building this system by buying a pair of Model 10S, then stands, then one or two subwoofers. The Model 10S Armada System provides the utmost flexibility in fine-tuning the loudspeaker's interaction with the room to deliver an ultimate listening experience. It will outclass just about any minimonitor subwoofer system and even some highly regard monitor-pedestal bass systems. While a good floorstanding loudspeaker offers the utmost efficiency in packaging, a good sub-sat system with two active subwoofer offers the utmost flexibility in tweaking the system's performance to maximize its performance relative to room acoustics.

Even if the Model 10S is operated full range it will image better because, with the EXPs in the system, the Model 10S will be played at lower volume since there is no psycoacoustical need to try to get the Model 10S to pressurize the room.
Here is what a reviewer said about a system consisting of a single EXP sub and a pair of NSM Model 5 speakers: "This sat sub combination is a steal. The sound is rich, the soundstaging convincing and the bass goes deep....and with the small size of the sat speakers, my wife is reasonably happy too. Hooked up to my Cambridge Audio Electronics for a total of $2k this system sounded almost as good as my $10k system." (Richard Cook, Audioreview.com)
Now imagine a pair of Model 10S that combined with a pair of EXPs producing quick stereo bass down to the low 20Hzs and you are ready to take on the Wilson Watt-Puppy system.
The Model 10S Armada System cannot match the dynamic ability of large monitor-pedestal bass systems such as the Wilson system, but the Wilson system's bass cannot match the speed of the Model 10S Armada EXPs' six inch woofers. And the Wilson system cannot match the Model 10S Armada System's finesse, imaging, and musicality.
The Model 10S
Ultra Definition Minimonitor
"During my audition I actually had no desire for a subwoofer ... Impressive for a speaker that can be held in one hand." (Audio Asylum, 10/2005)
"...crafted with jewel-like precision." (The Absolute Sound, 12/94)"Absolutely astonishing!" (Stereo, Germany, review of NSM 10S with Linn Classic, 6/98)
"...breathtaking..." (Hi-Fi News, Britain 8/93)
"...it is so smooth that I began to refer to it as tubelike." (Soundstage.com, 6/99)
"Its strengths include a lush and liquid presentation that does stellar things for vocals." (Soundstage.com, 2/2002)
"...a small sensation." (Stereo, Germany, review of NSM 10S with Linn Classic, 6/98)
more quotes from Model 10S reviews
"The quality of the bass that the EXP delivers is just like that of the 5 and 10S -- tight and tuneful."(Doug Schneider, Soundstage.com)
"...the EXP is on the money with solidity and control and proves ideally matched to NSMs speakers."(Doug Schneider, Soundstage.com)
"The EXP is an elegant-looking package that's attractive enough to sit out in the room..." (Doug Schneider, Soundstage.com)
Model 5 Armada System with one or two EXP Subwoofers
"...this system sounded almost as good as my $10k system."
(Model 5 Armada System with one subwoofer)
The EXP-Model 5 Subwoofer Satellite System
"This sat, sub combination is a steal. The sound is rich, the soundstaging convincing and the bass goes deep....and with the small size of the sat speakers, my wife is reasonably happy too. Hooked up to my Cambridge Audio Electronics for a total of $2k this system sounded almost as good as my $10k system."
(Richard Cook, Audioreview.com)This is one of the best small subwoofer-satellite systems at any price. The combination of the our highly regarded Model 5 minimonitors and one or two EXP subwoofers makes a formidable system. The absolute time coherence of our new Model 5 means images cast by the woofer and tweeter are perfectly integrated. And the EXP has a high quality 6dB high-pass filter that may be used to filter out bass from the Model 5 which will make the Model 5 image even better. The unprecedented new low price makes this combination one of the best values in high end audio.
We say without hesitation that very few small subwoofer satellite systems can match the performance of the EXP-5 system, regardless of price.
Doug Schneider has this to say about the Model 5:
"...they seemed to image like a hologram."
(Doug Schneider, Soundstage.com 1/1999)
"I was left shaking my head at the fact that such big sound came from such little boxes." (Doug Schneider, Soundstage.com 1/1999)
Doug Schneider has this to say about the EXP subwoofer:
"The quality of the bass that the EXP delivers is&tight and tuneful"
(Doug Schneider, Soundstage.com, 10/2000)
"The EXP is an elegant-looking package thats attractive enough to sit out in the room or neatly tucked away in a corner or near a wall."
(Doug Schneider, Soundstage.com, 10/2000)
