The Model EXP Quick Response Active Subwoofer System

EXP response graph-1

Figure 2: EXP Anechoic Frequency Response,
Crossover set to highest level

For two channel stereo systems the subwoofer should be set to a lower setting depending on the frequency response of the satellites. The phase switch should be set to the position that provides the most loudness when the subwoofer and the satellites are played together. This is an indication that the subwoofer and the satellites are in phase. The volume of the subwoofer should be adjusted to match the subwoofer's output to the output of the satellites.
    Figure 2 indicates that
at the lowest crossover setting the response of the EXP is flat from 30Hz. to 85Hz, +/- 3dB. Above 85Hz. the frequency response of the EXP fall off by 18dB per octave. This frequency response profile makes the EXP a cinch to integrate with most high quality two-way loudspeakers. Below 30Hz. the EXP response is down 10dB at 26 Hz. With room reinforcement, the usable output of the EXP can be down to the low 20 cycles.

For home theater systems, the crossover and volume level are usually set differently than for systems used solely for music. A higher crossover setting and a higher volume level will generally provide the most desirable results.
Note that unlike the typical subwoofer the EXP is designed to give flatter frequency response over a much wider frequency range.
      Figure 1 indicates that
at the highest crossover setting, the EXP response is flat from 35Hz. to 140Hz., +/-3dB, which meets the THX standards for subwoofer response. The emphasis in the response curve centered around 70 Hz. gives pitch definition and punch the EXP's bass response. Above 140Hz. the response fall off at 24 dB per octave, while below 35Hz. the subwoofer response is down 10dB at 30Hz. Room reinforcement can provide usable frequency response into the mid 20 cycles.
